Lantern Festival, or 元宵节 (Yuánxiāojié) in Chinese, is the last day of the Lunar New Year (also known as Spring Festival). It marks the first full moon of the new lunar year. It celebrates the return of spring; it is also a day when all people can come together to have fun as a community. On the night of the Lantern Festival, streets are decorated with colorful lanterns, often with riddles written on them. People eat sweet glutinous rice balls, called yuánxiāo (元宵) or tāngyuán (汤圆). These rice balls often have sweet fillings, which represents unity. Other traditions include setting off fireworks and releasing sky lanterns. It is truly a beautiful sight!
